Pediatric Orthopedics Adds Physician Assistant to the Medical Team

(Fort Myers – May 11, 2012) —Erica Leigh Boliek, M.M.S, PA-C, ATC has joined the staff of Pediatric Orthopedics of Southwest Florida as a Physician Assistant. Ms. Boliek brings a masters degree in physician assistant studies and extensive experience working with adolescent athletes to the medical practice. She earned a bachelors degree in athletic training, and put that degree to work as head athletic trainer for field hockey summer camps, where she performed musculoskeletal injury evaluations and rehabilitation programs for injured athletes. She has also worked as a personal trainer and currently teaches classes in the athletic training program at Florida Gulf Coast University. Ms. Boliek will use this unique combination of skills to assist patients of the practice.

“As pediatric orthopedists, many of the injuries we see are the result of children and adolescents participating in sports,” said Pediatric Orthopedics of Southwest Florida founding partner Dr. Brett Shannon. “Treating the youthful athlete requires different skills than dealing with adult athletes. Erica is a welcome addition to our team, and her skills will help young athletes to return to the sport of their choice, in the best physical condition possible.”

Ms. Boliek is a member of The American Academy of Physician Assistants, The Florida Academy of Physician Assistants and the National Athletic Trainers Association. She earned her bachelors degree in Athletic Training from the University of North Carolina (Charlotte) and her Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Salus University (Elkins Park, PA).

As part of the Pediatric Orthopedics team, Ms. Boliek will assist the physicians in treating pediatric athletes and in tailoring rehabilitation plans to assist young patients in returning to athletic activities in the best possible condition.

Pediatric Orthopedics of Southwest Florida Now Offers More Convenient Naples Office Location

(Fort Myers, Fla. – April 26, 2012) – Pediatric Orthopedics of Southwest Florida, the Fort Myers-based medical practice specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of infants, children, adolescents and young adults with orthopedic conditions, moved their Naples office to 1265 Creekside Parkway, Ste. 202, in Naples, next door to The Children’s Hospital Specialty Clinic in the Polaris Building. The physicians are on the staff of North Collier Hospital, Naples, and The Children’s Hospital at HealthPark Medical Center, Fort Myers.

As the only orthopedic practice in the Southwest Florida region specializing in the treatment of children, Doctors Brett Shannon, John Churchill and Matthew Wagner are board certified and uniquely trained to deal with musculoskeletal deformities and injuries like broken bones and joint, ligament, tendon and muscle problems in developing children. They also specialize in sports medicine, as well as congenital and developmental conditions such as scoliosis, limb deformity and spina bifida.

“We believe in patient-centered care and our goal is to help the child get back to life as normal as soon as possible,” says Dr. Shannon. “We have seen the need grow over the last two years that we have had the Naples office, so we wanted to improve the availability of our services so families don’t have to travel for specialized medical care, which means less down time from school and sporting activities.”

Treating injuries in children differs from adults because bones and muscles are often still growing and developing, requiring special care. Peds Ortho also employs physician assistants and physical therapists specializing in children’s orthopedic treatment, including scoliosis and sports injuries.
